Shared Space Study

I find the interactions between space vs. place very interesting.  I like how we interact with the space around us, changing it.   And how when two or more people's space come into the same place how the space changes yet again, mingling.  My windows piece is also an example of this idea.

Monsters

Doing monster illustrations has become a hobby of mine lately.  The main question I try to answer by drawing them is "Where do the monsters come from?"  Sometimes the monsters are scary, sometimes they seem almost benevolent.  I think that I draw them to in a way illustrate our unseen parts, our Id.  When I draw them it is almost like drawing portraits of what is really under our skin.

Urban Landscapes

This is part of a series of color film photographs of urban buildings that I did Junior year for my concentration in AP 2D Design.  What attracted me to taking pictures of these buildings were the lines and textures of them.  I really like older, slightly run-down buildings because of the textures of them.  I also liked being able to take pictures of normal everyday places that people pass by everyday without noticing and making them look at them a new way.

Encaustic Series: Depression in Wax

In this series I used Encaustic (beeswax) Collage as my medium for all of the pieces.  I based the series on depression and people I have met struggling with depression.  Depression is not considered an acceptable disease in society today.  When people hear "depression" they simply think that it is only an emotional thing, not a mental disease.  They consciously or unconsciously steer away from people with "depression" as if they could catch it too, like you would a cold.  In this series I wanted to represent some of these people struggling with this illness and a bit of their story (Kim, Emily, Jacob, Drowned).  I also wanted to show depression as a treatable illness (Postpartum, Serenity).
